The Russian battalion congregated at a training area near the village of Trudovske in occupied eastern Ukraine when the two missiles struck, The BBC reported Wednesday. Sources familiar with the incident told the outlet that the soldiers were gathered to await the arrival of a senior commander. Ukraine has yet to comment on the strike, but the BBC reported a US-made HIMARS launch system was used to fire the two missiles. In August, Ukraine said it launched a HIMARS attack on five Russian units gathered on a beach that resulted in 200 casualties and destroyed equipment. Some accounts at the time suggested the troops had been gathered to await a general's pep talk before a dangerous mission.

KHARTOUM, May 4 (Reuters) - Fierce fighting could be heard in central Khartoum on Thursday as the army tried to push back the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from areas around the presidential palace and army headquarters, with a lasting ceasefire appearing elusive. Heavy bombardments also rang out in the adjoining cities of Omdurman and Bahri. "Since yesterday evening, and this morning, there are air strikes and the sounds of clashes," said Al-Sadiq Ahmed, a 49-year-old engineer speaking from Khartoum. The United Nations has warned that fighting between the army and RSF, which erupted on April 15, risks causing a humanitarian catastrophe that could spill into other countries. The RSF accused the army of breaching a ceasefire and attacking forces since dawn.

Russia has appointed a single commander to lead all its forces in Ukraine, the country's Defense Ministry said Saturday. The army general, who is also head of Russia's air force, was placed in charge of Russian troops in southern Ukraine over the summer. Surovikin's appointment follows the reported sacking earlier this week of the commanders of two of Russia’s five military regions. Black smoke billows from a fire on the Kerch Strait Bridge that links Crimea to Russia on Saturday. It cited official information from Ukraine as well as reports from IAEA experts at the site, which is held by Russian forces.
